Trauma is the most frequent cause of death in first four decades of life. Globally approximately one third of trauma patients have abdominal trauma. Abdominal trauma is one of the most common causes of preventable trauma related death.
The aim of the prospective study spanning two years w.e.f. September 2014 to August 2016 in SGRR institute of medical and health sciences, Dehradun was to study outcomes of patients admitted with blunt trauma abdomen.
A total of 66 patients were studied in the age group of 18 to 60 years. Patients with penetrating abdominal injury, pregnant patients and those with associated serious extra abdominal injuries were excluded. The patients were studied according to set preforma with appropriate investigations.
RTA was the most common cause of blunt trauma abdomen. Younger persons were commonly involved with male to female ratio of 5: 1. Liver and spleen were most commonly injured organs. Small bowel perforation was second commonest injury. Other injuries included renal trauma, mesenteric tears, retroperitoneal hematoma, urethral trauma, gall bladder injury, urinary bladder perforation, perineal injury. Patient with mensenteric injury and hollow viscus perforation were always operated. Most cases of solid organ injuries were managed conservatively. Wound dehiscence was the commonest post-operative complication. Mortality occurred in 4 out of 66 cases of blunt abdominal trauma.
