Surgery as a Career Choice among Final Year Medical Students in a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital

Abstract

Choosing medical career path is one of major decision one will do in their medical academic life. Most of medical students choose specialty as their preferred medical career. Medical education requires the exposure of undergraduates to a wide range of medical specialties, and most students will have sampled many of the broad areas of practice by the time they qualify. As a result, it is often assumed that students do not make their career choices until after they have finished medical school, remaining agnostic about their final specialty choice until that time.

To identify the level of interest in surgical careers among medical students in a tertiary care teaching hospital

A Cross sectional study was carried out in the department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. All MBBS Students belongs to Second year, Third year and Final year were included and those who didn't give consent were excluded

Out of the 270 study participants majority were females 160 (69%) and 110 (31%) were males. Among the 181 students who had decided up career choice most common chosen specialty was General surgery 51(27%) followed by General medicine35(19%) and Paediatrics 25(14%)

Surgery is the most popular choice of postgraduate training by medical students
