Eye strain or asthenopia is one of common problem presented at ophthalmology outpatient department and the problem is quite common in the student age group. Various etiological factors such as ocular, physical, mental and nutritional factors are known to cause this ophthalmological menace. The current prospective study on asthenopia was undertaken over 100 students, the commonly affected group at outpatient department of Government General hospital Anantapuramu as to know various causative factors and their management. During the study, it is found that ocular factors and mental stain are the key etiological factors for asthenopia. Hypermetropia and myopia are the refractive errors that at commonly associated with the asthenopia. The study indicates that students of 14–25 years are to be thoroughly screened for refractive errors as to keep them away from asthenopia. However, it is warranted that further studies are to be undertaken as to role of new etiological factors such as watching electronic gadgets, mobile phones and tablets in causing asthenopia.
