Laparoscopic surgery has revolutionized the field of surgery in last three decades because of the advantages it provide over the conventional surgery. With passing time, the horizon of laparoscopic surgery is widening, with more complex operation being performed. In this context, proper training of residents in laparoscopic surgery is very important. So we analyzed the preliminary data analyzing the laparoscopic suturing skill and endurance of residents between OT trained and Endotrainer trained residents.
We took 10 residents of surgery department of MMC, Muzaffarnagar, divided into two groups of 5 each. One group was trained in the OT (Group 1) and another group trained on the endotrainer (Group 2). These groups were compared between laparoscopic suturing skills and endurance (how many minutes resident can do laparoscopic suturing without affecting his/her skills).
Group 1 residents did laparoscopic suturing with average time of 6 minutes, while group 2 did with average time of 4 minutes. In global assessment score, there was difference between these two groups, better score of the group 2. For the endurance, group 1 was able to do laparoscopic suturing for 20 minutes and group 2 was able to do for 35 minutes.
By comparing these 2 groups, we found that endotrainer trained residents were able to laparoscopic suturing faster and with better global assessment score. They had better endurance for the laparoscopic suturing. So it is important to provide training outside OT.
The residents in surgery department should work on endotrainer to improve laparoscopic psychomotor skills outside OT if we want to provide better laparoscopic training and therefore better laparoscopic surgery in the society.
