Abstract

Umbilical hernia repair surgery is a procedure that fixes umbilical hernias. An umbilical hernia is a bulge or pouch that forms in the abdomen. This type of bulge occurs when a section of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles, near the belly button. It can develop in young children and adults. This study aims to know the demography profile and open mesh repair of Umbilical hernia.

Patients who underwent Umbilical hernia repair at Victoria hospital, Bengaluru between July 2015 to January 2017 were studied. In the open hernia mesh repair technique, the mesh was placed preperitoneal layer after creating the space. It consisted of a wide dissection of tissue to allow a mesh overlap of 3 cm-5 cm beyond the outer border of the fascial defect. The results were noted with respect to Duration of surgery, Use of Drains, complications like wound infection, seroma, and haematoma, Return to normal activity, Duration of hospital stay.

A total of 39 patients underwent umbilical hernia repair. 39(44.32%) patients underwent open mesh repair. The number of postoperative complications in the open umbilical hernia repair is found in 14 patients (48.71%). No wound complications occurred in our study. In our study higher wound infection rate did not reach statistical significance. In our study mean duration required for surgery is 50 minutes. Complications like wound infection, seroma and haematoma were common. All seromas resolved within 6 weeks of surgery without aspiration and were not considered complications. In this study post-operative drainage used in 19 patients (48.71%). The mean duration of hospital stay our study is 5.9 days. Patients are normal activity within 6.8 weeks.

open umbilical hernia repair is a safe and effective technique. Time required for surgery is relatively less, Complications like wound infection, seroma and haematoma were common, Duration of hospital stay is relatively more, Return to normal activity is slower. More use of postoperative drains is required. Need further study to compared the efficacy with other surgical techniques of umbilical hernia repair.
