The purpose of teaching is to facilitate students towards better comprehension of the subject with increased retention of information and development of lifelong learning skills. This study was undertaken to assess and compare the learning outcomes at various levels of cognitive domains like recall, analysis, comprehension and application using two methods of teaching i.e. traditional didactic lecture and the use of audiovisual methods in obstetrics and gynaecology.
This study was conducted on 30 final year students posted to department of OBG, Rajrajeshwari medical college and hospital, Bangalore in the year 2016. These students were randomly allocated to two study groups by lottery method. The topic of breech presentation was taught by the same teacher but using two methods. A questionnaire of 10 questions addressing various levels of cognitive domain i.e. recall, analysis, comprehension and application was assessed in the two groups before and after the specific teaching method.
There was statistically significant improvement in the pre-test and post-test scores in both the groups in all three domains analysed. But, when comparison was made to look for the increase in pre-test scores across the two teaching methodology, the students in the audiovisual group had statistically significant improvement in scores in all three domains. In the recall domain, the statistical difference (p value) was <0.001 with a mean difference of 2.5 marks. The mean difference of scores in the analysis domain was 1.4 (p value=0.049) and the comprehension domain was 1.6 (p value=0.002).
Structured teaching using audiovisual aids in any form improves the efficacy in all domains of learning.
