Preliminary study of Laparoscopic skills among experienced Laparoscopic surgeons in Western Up

In western UP, majority of laparoscopic surgeons are doing laparoscopic cholecystectomy as the main laparoscopic procedure. Apart from this, other less commonly procedure performed are laparoscopic appendicectomy and laparoscopic hernia repair. We tried to find out the reason of not doing the complex procedure laparoscopically commonly, by analyzing the laparoscopic skill of the experienced laparoscopic surgeons in western UP.

We gathered the information about the experienced laparoscopic surgeons in western UP who are doing laparoscopic surgeries from last 15 years and doing good numbers in one year. These surgeons were observed while doing laparoscopic surgery and things noted are about the laparoscopic skills. All these skills were assessed by experienced laparoscopic surgeon according to global assessment scores of 1 to 5.

We analyzed that laparoscopic skills of the non dominant hand was very poor, even for the simple laparoscopic skills also like reaching a point and grasping the tissue precisely. We also found that the stamina of surgeon was limited, especially if the surgery was prolonged beyond one and half hour. These experienced laparoscopic surgeons were lacking in suturing of dominant hand, all the laparoscopic skills of non dominant hand and endurance.

We found that experienced laparoscopic surgeons in western UP were lacking in suturing of dominant hand, all the laparoscopic skills of non dominant hand and endurance. Therefore these surgeons may not be able to do the more complex laparoscopic surgeries.

If the surgeons train themselves for the laparoscopic skills of non dominant hand, then they will be able to do more complex laparoscopic surgeries comfortably.
