Abstract

Infants are defined as children's up to one year of age. Intestinal obstruction in infant is commonest cause in emergency in which rapid resuscitation and intervention is required to prevent complication including death. This study provides incidence of intestinal obstruction in infants, sex prediction, spectrum of etiologies of intestinal obstruction and outcome of infants in these cases.

This is prospective study done from January 2016-June 2017 in U.P.U.M.S, Saifai, Etawah, U.P. a tertiary health care center situated in western U.P. During this one and half year of period patient of age one year or below this who attended emergency and outdoor of Pediatrics Surgery, Pediatrics Medicine and General Surgery with features of intestinal obstruction were included in this study.

During the study period of one and half year total 76 infants were admitted and operated in our center with features of intestinal obstruction. During this study male female ratio were 2.5: 1. Out of 76 infants anorectal malformation was found in 50%, intussusception was found in 14.44%, Hirschsprung's disease was found in10.52%, duodenal obstruction, congenital peritoneal band and Meckel's band was found 3.94%, atresia and hernia of umbilical cord was found in 2.63%, meconium intestinal obstruction, malrotation, ileal knotting, adhesive obstruction, obstructed inguinal hernia and idiopathic hypertrophic pyloric stenosis(IHPS) was found in 1.31%..

Early identification, resuscitation and surgical management of intestinal obstruction in infants decrease morbidity and moralities in infants. Reason of male sex predominance is not known.
