Bilateral carotid body tumor/chemodectoma/paraganglioma-A rare case report

A carotid body tumour is a rare presentation paraganglioma which typically presents as a slow growing, painless neck mass found along the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, in region of carotid sheath and careful preoperative evaluation both clinical and radiological is required to find out the functional and vascular status of these tumours.

Carotid body paragangliomas were diagnosed by Doppler ultrasound, carotid artery angiography, cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. These tumours are generally benign but possess aggressive local growth potential. Therefore, definitive treatment requires surgical resection.

A 55-year-old female patient presented with a neck swellings that had persisted for 2 years. On physical examination, a pulsating soft to firm painless mass measuring about 3 × 3 cm in right and 2*2 cm in left size was found on left side of her neck, near the jugulo carotid area, freely moveable horizontally, but not vertically with an audible systolic bruit. workup revealed bilateral carotid body tumourss(CBT); the largest was right-sided shamblin class II whereas the left sided was shamblin class I tumours

This case report emphasizes the significance of tharough evaluation. Although the condition is extremely rare, it is a potentially dangerous in its massive form if not timely diagnosed & managed properly. With the increasing awareness of such conditions. More & more cases could be detected. Bilateral CBTs are rare neoplasms with controversial treatment. The best treatment option should be tailored to each patient
