A retrospective study on laparoscopic options for the management of appendicular lump

Abstract

Acute appendicitis in most common cause of acute pain abdomen[1, 2]. An Appendiceal mass range from phlegmon to abscess and it develops in 2%-6% of cases following acute appendicitis [3]. The treatment of appendicular mass is controversial. It is changing from the traditional approach of initial conservative treatment followed by interval appendectomy to immediate appendectomy[4, 5]

All the patients who underwent laparoscopic appendicectomy between Jul’17 to Dec’17, in SVBP hospital, Meerut were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 42 patients were treated for appendicitis. A retrospective review of the patients's record, while they were in the hospital demonstrated that 21 patients had an appendicular mass when they were admitted to the hospital. The data was analyzed by SPSS 21.0 version

In our study we retrospectively analyzed 42 patients. Out of which 26 patients were male and 14 patients were female. During the study period laparoscopic appendectomy was performed upon 21 patients. Male to female ratio was 1.8: 1. The patients ranged in age from 10 years to 42 years. 25 patients were febrile when they were admitted to the hospital & most patients (76%) had leukocytosis of greater than 11, 000 per mm3. All 21 patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomies within 24 hours of admission. The average operative time was 90 minutes. The average length of hospital stay was six days. Appendicular abscess was the most common intra-operative finding seen in 9 patients

On the basis of our findings we can suggest that it is feasible to perform laparoscopic appendicectomy in the patients with appendicular lump.
