Locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) refers to advanced stage non-metastatic breast tumors with a variety of clinical presentations. These patients are at a significantly higher risk of local and distant relapse and have a worse overall survival. Intensive efforts have been made to identify prognostic factors and define patients into subgroups and select appropriate treatment options. This study was undertaken to assess the clinical and pathological profile of LABC patients in our population
To correlate the clinical, pathological and molecular profile of LABC patients with treatment outcome
We prospectively analyses 104 consecutive patients with LABC. Clinical, pathological and molecular factors were studied independently and correlated with treatment outcome. Log rank test was used for univariate analysis whereas Cox-regression model was used for multivariate analysis
On uni-variate analysis, factors associated with Disease free survival (DFS) were Lump size (0.0041), T stage (0.0283), Overall stage (P=0.0558), Pathological complete response (P=0.0272), > 3 nodes involvement (P=0.0026) and ER status (P=0.0132). Factors associated with OS were Lump size (P=0.0142), T stage (P=0.0176), Overall stage (P=0.0345), > nodes involvement (P=0.0143), and ER status (P=0.0541). By using multivariate Cox-regression analysis, the independent predictors of DFS were Lump size (p=0.037) and ER status (p=0.039) whereas no factor was found to be significantly associated with overall survival
Prognostic factors significantly associated with Disease free survival (DFS) were lump size and Estrogen receptor status.
