Abstract

Twenty genotypes of chickpea were evaluated for variability in nodulation and nitrogen uptake in a nitrogen deficient soil under rainfed condition. Wide variations in nodule number, dry weight of nodules and N uptake were found among genotypes. Genotypes with higher nodule number and nodule dry weight showed higher shoot dry matter. Nitrogen content in plants showed little variability but nearly 33 per cent variability was found in total N uptake. Among the twenty genotypes studied, ICC-4958 and IPC-54-94 were found to be high N accumulating genotypes.
