The effect of organic manure, inorganic fertilizer alone and in combination in different proportions were tested under rainfed condition with sole rice, sole blackgram and mixture of both rice and blackgram crop. During Kharif the highest mean rice equivalent grain yield of 40.59 q ha−1 was observed in sole crop of black gram followed by rice + black gram as taken in the main plot treatment irrespective of fertilizer application. With respect to fertilizer/manure treatments in sub plots indicated that highest mean rice equivalent grain yield of 30.3q ha−1 was observed when 15 kg of N ha −1 was supplied through farm yard manure (FYM) along with 10 kg N ha−1 as chemical fertilizer (CF) where as lowest rice equivalent grain yield of 17.16 q ha−1 was observed with control. During rabi season the mean highest grain yield of horse gram (2.15 q ha−1) was observed with 25 kg N as FYM applied to kharif crop and lowest yield (0.85q ha−1) was observed with control plot. The increase in the yield of horse gram may be due to more availability of residual nutrients as compared to other treatments. Highest water use efficiency (WUE) of 3.77 kg ha−1 mm−1 was observed with the treatment where combination of both organic and inorganic fertilizers were applied to kharif crop in form of 15kg N from FYM and 20 kg N from CF. Combination of both organic and inorganic fertilizer increased the water availability which was reflected by more WUE by crop of that treatment.
