Estimation of Dispersion Coefficient by using Mathematical Model of Upputeru River at Estuary

Abstract

Estuary is a semi-enclosed body of water, one end of which is subject to tidal variation and the other end of which is subject to fresh water flow. A positive estuary is an estuary where the fresh water inflow derived from river discharge and precipitation exceeds the outflow caused by evaporation. Negative estuaries are those where evaporation exceeds river flow plus precipitation. The interaction of fresh and salt water provides a circulation of water and mixing processes that are driven by density differences between the two waters. Due to low inflows from Kolleru Lake, the fresh water of Upputeru River has been transformed into saline water for almost six months and thereby vanishing the existing fresh water resources of the Coastal Villages. So, the total irrigation lands adjacent to Upputeru river and its sub drains like Bondada drain, Mogadingi drain etc.., also were affected by salt water impact due to high tidal action of Sea. In the present study the dispersion coefficient is estimated by using mathematical model and presented in this paper.
