Effect of nitrogen fertilizer on Brassica carinata and its effect on cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L.

Abstract

Effect of nitrogen fertilizers on total glucosinolate concentration of Ethiopian mustard Brassica carinata plants and cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L. was studied under greenhouse condition. Nitrogenous fertilizers’ application was observed positively correlated with total nitrogen, protein and sugar content of B. carinata but negatively with leaf phosphorus and total glucosinolate contents. Aphids that fed on plants treated with highest nitrogen rate (150%) had shorter prereproduction, and longer reproduction periods with more longevity. Thus, increase in nitrogen led to intrinsic rate of increase, with a greater number of nymphs, apterous and alate adults.
