Abstract

The seed oil of Givotia moluccana extracted using Soxtherm with petroleum ether (40 - 60°C) as solvent was analysed by gas chromatograph system equipped with flame ionization detector (FID) and MS/MS. Ten compounds, accounting for 97.6% of the oil, were identified and the main components were gamma linolenic acid (30.69%) and linoleic acid (27.99%). The oil exhibited 96.67 and 30% adult mortality against the pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis L. in 24 hr after treatment at 40 μl/5 g of mung bean when directly applied to the grains and in impregnated filter paper method, respectively. Adult mortality of 90% resulted in 72 hr in impregnated filter paper method. The LC50 values of the oil ranged from 13.70 to 24.20, 4.77 to 12.44, 1.05 to 9.65 ml/5 g at 24,48 and 72 hr, respectively when directly applied to the grains. When filter paper was impregnated with seed oil, LC50 values ranged from 110.48 to 1521.00, 15.95 to 57.27 and 3.67 to 18.02 ml/5 g at 24,48 and 72 hr, respectively with 95% fiducial limit in both the cases. It can be said that G. moluccana seed oil shows efficacy against C. chinensis and can be suggested for protection of mung bean grains and seeds.
