Meiosis in Some Common Grasshoppers

Abstract

In order to determine the diploid complement, chromosome behaviour, and evolutionary trend, three male specimens of Gesonula punctifrons (Stal), Atractomorpha crenulata (Fabricius), and Oedaelus abruptus (Thunberg) were selected. Using insect nets or hand-picking, the specimens were gathered from five terrestrial habitats in Manipur between October 2022 and July 2023. Gesonula punctifrons and Oedaelus abruptus had a diplotene/ diakinensis haploid count of 12, whereas Atractomorpha crenulata had a haploid count of 10. As a result, their diploid counts were 23 and 19, respectively. The X0 system is the sex-determination system in these. Atractomorpha crenulata with exposed terminals had the thinnest pachytene elements, while Oedaelus abruptus had the thickest leptotene threads. All three species had very different diplotene loops.
