Insect Pollinator Diversity and Richness in Coriander

Abstract

Measurements of diversity and species richness are important parameters for any biodiversity and agro-ecological research. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) forms an important spice crop in Madhya Pradesh. During the study period (3 years), coriander flowers were visited by 16 species of pollinators. Different diversity indices, such as Shannon-Weiner index, Simpson index (D), Margalef index, Pielou index, Fisher's alpha, Berger–Parker dominance index were used to asses the diversity understanding the diversity and richness of insect pollinators. The order Hymenoptera was the most important (89.57% of visitors) responsible for pollination followed by Diptera (9.36%). The honey bee species Apis florea was the predominant pollinator. Episyrphus balteatus (Syrphidae) was the second-largest contributor to pollination. The study highlights the conservation of bees and flies as important groups responsible for pollination of C. sativum.
