Annotated checklist of brachyuran crabs of Karwar mangroves, West Coast of Karnataka, India

Abstract

The brachyuran crab fauna from six stations of Kali estuary mangroves, Karwar was surveyed during 2019-2020. All 30 species of brachyuran crabs belonging to 24 genera representing 8 families were recorded; crabs belonging to the family Grapsidae, Ocypodidae, Portunidae is the most dominant group represented by a total of 21 species. Out of these, three species are considered as commercial crabs and they are Scylla serrata , Thalamita crenata , Charybdis annulata . Scylla species like Scylla serrata , S. tranquebarica are caught in large quantities from Karwar mangroves; their checklist and distributions are given.
