Abstract

Ecological based study was conducted on abundance, composition, monthly variation and vertical zonation pattern of marine macro algae along Karwar coast, Arabian Sea, India. The study reveals Majali rocky shore to be an ideal site for algal diversity with distinctive pattern of zonation combat with the main abiotic environmental stressors like tidal amplitude, dissolved oxygen and salinity. The present study recorded six new species ( Ulva prolifera, Ulva flexuosa, Rhizoclonium tortuosum, Rhizoclonium ramosum, Hypnea pseudomusciformis and Hypnea valentine), which were prior not tabulated during the earlier studies which indicates increased species diversity along Karwar coast.
