Assessment of yield and nutrient uptake of wheat in agri-silvi-horticulture system under semi-arid region of Haryana

Abstract

The study was conducted to work out the effect of agri-silvi-horticulture system on yield and nutrient uptake of wheat. Study was conducted on an already established seven year old agri-horticultural (Kinnow + wheat), agri-silvi-horticultural (Kinnow+ Eucalyptus+ wheat) systems and control (wheat only). Significantly higher grain and straw yield of wheat was recorded in case of agri-horticultural system as compared to agri-silvi-horticultural system. Significant increase in straw and grain yield of wheat was 21.0 and 29.1%, respectively under Kinnow + wheat over Kinnow + Eucalyptus + wheat based agri-silvi-horticulture system. The grain yield of wheat in association with Kinnow alone and Kinnow + Eucalyptus was reduced by 67.3 and 58.8%, respectively over sole cropping system. However, nutrient content of wheat grain and straw was not affected by different tree based systems. Concentration of N in wheat grain was highest followed by K and P, whereas the concentration of K was highest in wheat straw followed by N and P in all treatments. Different treatment depicted significant effect on nutrient uptake by wheat. The N, P and K uptake by wheat grain under sole wheat was significantly higher followed by Kinnow + wheat and lowest was found under Kinnow + Eucalyptus + wheat. Potassium uptake was also significantly highest under sole wheat, but potassium uptake under Kinnow + wheat and Kinnow + Eucalyptus + wheat was statistically similar. Similar pattern was observed for straw and total nutrient uptake by wheat in different system.
