Abstract

This paper presents a comparative performance analysis of balanced and direct detection demodulation methods for the duobinary modulated optical signal at 40Gbps optical communication link. The receiver performance has been optimized to estimate the electrical and optical filter parameters for optimum performance under dispersion and self phase modulation induced impairments. The presented model has been operated under the limitations of SPM on the BERequivalent Q-factor. The analysis also includes the influence of GVD on system performance under varying system length by introducing Residual dispersion per span (RDPS) factor. Presented results shows a superiority of balanced detection to the direct detection & thus can be choice of demodulation scheme for long distance optical communication systems.
