Internet of Things (IoT) has made human life comfortable, convenient and secured by adding intelligent features in sensors and actuators. It has made connectivity more pervasive and has enhanced the quality of human life. In the present paper, three uses of IoT have been discussed. First, it has been used for smart home application for controlling lights, door bell, water pump, garage door, etc. In order to safeguard vehicles from occurrence of fatal accidents object detection for predictive vehicle collision avoidance system has been studied as the second application. In the third application, smart grid for load management using home area network has been investigated. Obstacle distance measurement using Raspberry Pi has been observed with lowest error percentage than other boards and smart grid application has reduced the infrastructure cost owing to multiple user access on time shared basis and enhanced the efficiency of the system.
