A retrospective analysis of 81 pediatric patients put on Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support from January 2007 to December 2009 for various reasons in our institute. Purpose of the study is the effective management of pediatric patients on ECMO in the intensive care unit.
Eighty-one pediatric patients were put on ECMO for various post surgical causes. The ECMO were set up with poly methyl pentene (PMP) membrane hollow fiber oxygenators with open chest cannulation method and centrifugal pump.
The management of anticoagulation, ventilator settings, and maintenance of ECMO, monitoring, role of perfusionist in intensive care unit, complications and the survival statistics confirm that right timing and teamwork reduces the mortality and morbidity associated with ECMO support in complex cases.
