Drug Use and Abuse during Cardiopulmonary Bypass

The extracorporeal circulation (ECC) is a very complex technique presenting unique challenges to the perfusionist during its conduct. Despite advances in perfusion techniques and extra corporeal technology, use of drugs during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) requires a thorough understanding of its pharmacology. Moreover, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs used during CPB are complex. There are several number of drugs that can be used before, after and during CPB. The clinical background, as well as the surgical intervention planned makes the scenario even more complex. Optimal perfusion of a patient is dictated by several variables of which drug usage is an integral part. Guidelines regarding the appropriate use of drugs on CPB can simply facilitate the best use of drugs during CPB and prevent it's abuse.
