Abstract

The risk of catastrophic intra-operative sickle cell crisis is a major consideration during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in sickle cell patients. Severe vaso-occlusive crisis which occurs at low oxygen concentrations could be disastrous for the patient. A sound strategy must be devised to prevent this. We report the details of a patient with homozygous sickle cell anaemia who underwent successful mitral valve replacement (MVR) in our institution.
