Growth and performance of micro, small and medium enterprises in India

The present study evaluates the growth and performance of micro, small and medium enterprises in India pertaining to the period 1990–91 to 2010–11. The time series data related to number of units, employment, production and exports trends have been compiled from the Annual Reports of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The results of the study revealed that the role and significance of MSMEs in industrial production and employment generation has increased manifold over time. The size of MSMEs, production and exports indices all have shown upward trend during the period under study. However, the results revealed that the sickness was found among the MSMEs in India since the onset of economic reforms. This calls for immediate policy measures in the direction of building infrastructure, R&D activities and skill formation in order to enhance the working of these enterprises.
