Abstract

Agriculture itself, is an intrinsically risky industry. So, managing risks and uncertainties in agriculture is very important as it affects all sectors of the economy. There are two primary aspects of risk management i.e. either anticipating an unfavorable event or acting to reduce its chances or contingency planning-taking actions ahead of time to reduce the negative consequences if something bad happens. Hence, this study was planned with a focus on understanding the farmers ’strategies in managing the risk and uncertainty in rainfed agriculture. The study was conducted in two districts viz, Bijapur and Solapur districts of Karnataka and Maharashtra respectively. The primary data was collected through personal survey by stratified sampling method. Tabular analysis, descriptive analysis were carried out for analysing the data. The low mean scores indicated that the farmers were generally having less favourable attitude towards farming in general, changes in agriculture and risk management in agriculture which may be due to the complex risk prone rainfed agriculture in dry land areas.
