Poverty is more visible and widespread in the developing countries of the world like India. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) is a flagship poverty alleviation programme of the Government of India, which seeks to guarantee at least 100 days of employment every year to the rural poor or enhance livelihood security by 100 days of employment a year to one member of every rural unemployed family. In this paper, an attempt is made to measure the extent of poverty among the MGNREGA beneficiaries in the economy Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. This study shows that there is poverty prevalent among MGNREGA beneficiaries in the study area. The influence of MGNREGA on the marginal holdings seems to be less effective. In addition, the influence of MGNREGA on poverty reduction also seems to be not much effective in all categories of land holdings as the MGNREGA could reduce the percentage of poor to an extent of 2.75 percent only.
