Impact assessment of bgrei programme on cropping intensity, production, productivity and income of farmers in Assam

Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI), a flagship programme under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) is intended to address the constraints limiting the productivity of "rice-based cropping system" and launched in 2010–11 in Eastern India comprising Assam amongst others. The objectives of BGREI were to increase production, productivity, cropping intensity and income of farmers. Hence the study was undertaken in the Jorhat district of Assam to assess the impact of BGREI on the parameters mentioned as above. Multistage stratified random sampling technique was followed and data were collected from 120 respondents comprising 80 beneficiaries and 40 non-beneficiaries from two different agriculture circles. The study found that there was a marginal change in the cropping intensity of the beneficiaries of the programme. In the case of the non-beneficiaries, no steady trend was observed. The productivity and hence production, as well as income, was higher in case of beneficiaries compared to the non-beneficiaries and thus the BGREI programme has a positive impact on the cropping intensity, production, productivity and income of farmers in Assam.
