Structural Analysis of National Agricultural Research System in India

This research paper has analysed the structure of National Agricultural Research System in India, thus covering wide issues ranging from agriculture R&D expenditure, its broad sectoral division, agriculture R&D intensity at All-India level as well as at state-level to the role of the private sector in research and extension. The findings highlight that during the decade of 1970–71 to 1979–80 the growth rate was the highest 11.04 per cent per annum. The results showed that during the period 2010–11, the two hilly states Himachal Pradesh (`1361.25) and Jammu & Kashmir (`1125.99) revealed the highest expenditure on agriculture research as per hectare whereas Uttar Pradesh (`1.67) and Rajasthan (`34.84) showed very low expenditure on agricultural R&D. The findings indicated there is need to increase the public sector dominates in the agricultural R&D. Therefore the government should emphasise on the improvement of public sector research efficiency.
