Wheat is the second most important cereal crop in India. The present study examined the cost and profitability of wheat. The result found that bullock labour was substituted by machines. Madhya Pradesh showed the highest and positive, highly significant growth rate and lowest by the Punjab state for all the costs. Madhya Pradesh showed the lowest cost of cultivation compared to other states, revealing wheat production in the state was more cost-effective as compared to other states. Break even analysis showed all the five wheat-producing states were operating in the profit zone but break-even yield widened in Madhya Pradesh and Raj asthan, it means profitability was increasing in these states.
