Abstract

This paper examines the improvement of Available Transfer Capability (ATC) by the use of Static Var Compensator (SVC) in a competitive electricity market. In this paper, static ATC has been computed using voltage and Saddle Node Bifurcation (SNB) limits. An iterative procedure is used for obtaining the voltage and SNB limits. The impact of SVC placement in a system on the ATC values has been studied for various bilateral and multilateral transactions with both static and dynamic loads present in the system. Detailed analysis of results are obtained for 9-bus Western System Coordinating Council and 39-bus New England system. The results strongly suggest that SVC enhances the system ATC substantially.
