Abstract

Kinnow cultivation is one of options for diversification to sustain farming and has, over the period, has emerged as an important crop in Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. We analyzethe perceived risk and their risk management strategies in kinnow value chain. The study was conducted in Fazilka and Bathinda dstricts of Punjab and Sirsa district of Haryana. Based on the area under crop, two blocks from each district were selected, and then from each selected block, a cluster of 2–3 villages were selected for the primary data collection from farmers, traders, retailers, processors, extension agents, government officials and private services providers. Qualitative techniques and principal component analysis was used for identifying sources of risks in value chain, and risk management strategiesof stakeholders. Price and production variability are major source of risk, and pre-harvest contracts, diversification, investment, are major risk management strategies.
