Abstract

Empowerment in the context of women's development is a way of defining, challenging and overcoming barriers in a women's life through which she increases her ability to shape her life and environment. Studies show that craft is an important sector in women's livelihood as it is a viable option for employment & income generation. Hence, there is a need to examine the socio economic status, extent of participation in decision making activities of women working in appliqué craft of Pipili. For this study information was elicited by questionnaire cum interview method from 104 married women working in eight handicraft production units of Pipili. According to the D.M.I score, the respondents were having medium participation in the decision making related to domestic activities (42.39) and money related matter (45.04). But their extent of participation was low in the decisions related to agricultural operation (34.61) and freedom of movement outside home (30.62). As per the findings, it seems that women in the study area do not enjoy a high degree of autonomy in decision making activities of the family although they are earning.
