Abstract

A study was conducted to assess the farming conditions in the watershed areas of Chitradurga district of Karnataka in 2019. Social-economic profile of farmers and biophysical characteristics of the watershed area were assessed to obtain baseline data for streamlining development activities to promote sustainable farming practices. Personal interview, group discussion and key informants consultation were used to quantify data. Six watersheds studied have a total land area of 4, 766.4 ha. Majority i.e. 84 (52.50%) respondents belonged to middle age group (36–50 years). Most of the respondents were semi-medium farmers with high farming experience. Biophysical results indicated that watershed is endowed with red sandy soil with medium fertility. Majority of respondents (59.38%) had access to bore well. Value of agriculture land was found to be in the range of 5.11 to 7.39 lakhs per ha. These findings would guide the planners and extension agencies in their future interventions.
