Barriers to adaptation stucks farmers ability to address the negative impact of climate change or manage risk arised due to climate change for well being of people. This study identified and characterized the barriers to adaptation strategies in Madhya Pradesh. The study was conducted in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh by purposely selected 240 farmers from ten villages using proportionate random sampling method. Adaptation barriers were classified into four category viz. technical, input, institutional and socio-economic barriers. Results showed that major technical barriers were poor information on early warning systems and absence of agricultural policy on climate change, while non availability of inputs on timely basis and higher cost of the agricultural inputs were input related barriers. In case of institution related barriers, irregularity of agricultural extension service, lack of storage facility in the village and absence of processing units in the village. Adaptation strategy is not cost effective, low price for the produce in the market as the quality of product affected by weather variation were the main barriers related to socio-economic barriers. The findings indicated the need to overcome these barriers by the development departments and extension functionaries, farmers can adopt suitable adaptation strategies on timely basis to reduce or mitigate negative impact of climate change.
