Aspirations of Rural Youth in Indian Agriculture-An Overview

Abstract

The aspirations of rural youth in the development process is essential in order to bring change in socio-economic structure and improving the rural quality of life. The place of rural youth class is more important for the future of country. Rural youth are the precious human assets who can play an important role in the development of agriculture and other allied activities. The rural youth male and female, because of their family and community background in farming are active partners in various agriculture allied activities. Youths can make their constructive contribution to national development and through which society can benefit from the idealism and the sense of dedication of youth at the same time, they also get benefitted from their occupational aspirations, educational aspirations, enterprise aspiration and general aspirations in all aspects. Since such aspirations increases their self esteem, gives them a sense of identity and of being needed by the society. India has rich rural youth potential. The population of rural youth in developmental activities contribute to national development. Hence in this study was made in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu with 200 sample rural youth respondents. As regard their occupational aspirations about half of the respondents (51.00%) have aspired for doing agribusiness activities followed by about forty percentage of the respondents (39.50%) who were interested in carrying out farming. With regard to their enterprise oriented occupation majority of the respondents (59.50%) aspired for engaging themselves in bee keeping activities. It also seen that about half of the respondents (49.50%) were interested in dairy farming. About two half of the respondents (39.50%) have expressed interest in agriculture and crop production. With regard to educational aspirations majority of the respondents (64.00%) had medium level of aspiration followed by low (18.50%) and high levels (17.50%). It is an appreciable fact that most of the respondents (81.50%) were found to be distributed between medium to high levels of general aspiration.
