Abstract

To understand how socio-personal profile of dairy farmers affect the organic waste production and utilization, an ex-post facto study was proposed in District Ludhiana of Punjab. A sample of 80 dairy farmers (40 small and large each) were selected through multistage random sampling. Results revealed the average age of farmers to be 47.78 years, most of the farmers (38.75%) were having education upto high school, majority farmers (50.00%) were having dairy farming as primary occupation, average land holding was 16.53 acres, average family size was seven, average herd size in cattle equivalents was found to be 16.96, average dairy farming experience was 24.99 years andmajority of the farmers (60.00%) were having low level of social participation. Family size, land holding and herd size were having highly significant (p<0.01) effect on waste production whereas land holding, herd size and social participation were found to be having highly significant (p<0.01) effect on waste utilization. Land holding was found to be increasing the burning of crop residues whereas education and herd size was found to be decreasing the economic value lost due to burning of crop residues. Education was found to be brining desired results for organic waste management and hence emphasis should be laid on educating the farmers for better utilization of organic waste through various sustainable organic waste management practices.
