The concept of livelihood and livelihood improvement are increasingly gaining importance in the development scenario. Taking the stock and documentation of diversities of livelihood strategies and contribution of different livelihood activities maintained by the farmers and rural people are essential for policy process and strategy formulation. The present study attempted to explore the degree of performance and characterize the French bean growers and their existing livelihood in Tuensang district of Nagaland, India. In this study, two blocks and three villages from each block were purposely selected. From each village, 20 French bean growers and altogether,120 respondents were selected. The study showed that the majority of the French bean growers were “lower medium” age group having education upto primary level. Most of the respondents had “medium land holding” and “medium land” under French bean cultivation. Most of the respondents had limited annual income with medium income from agriculture. Majority of the respondents had the experience of growing French bean for more than nine years. Majority of the respondents had bamboo and tin sheet made house with medium material possession. In respect of livelihood, all the respondents continued French bean-based, cropbased (excluding French bean), livestock-based and forest-based livelihood activities and only a few respondents continued off-farm livelihood activities. Comparison of average income was also done between the different livelihood activities and showed that income from French bean was significantly different from the income from other livelihood activities and contributing 46.96 per cent to annual income. Livestock-based livelihood activities were also contributing 38.94 per cent to annual income. Other livelihood activities, viz., Crop-based, forest-based and off-farm, were contributing 6.42 per cent, 4.92 per cent and 2.75 per cent, respectively.
