Rural indebtedness is one of the most serious problems of Indian rural economy. This problem is the sign of weak financial infrastructural facilities available to the farmers for their survival and development. The study was conducted on small and marginal farmers in Palwal and Mewat districts of Haryana. The results of the study indicate that majority of the respondents (60.00%) took the loan for purchasing crop inputs like pesticides, seeds, manure etc. On the other hand, nearly one-third of the respondents (31.25%) took loan for performing the social ceremonies. On an average amount of loan of ₹24133 was taken by respondents from institutional and non-institutional sources. It was found that 64.17 per cent and 56.67 per cent respondents reported crop failure and low yield as major causes of indebtedness respectively.
