The National Development Council in its 53rd meeting held on 23rd May, 2007 adopted a resolution to launch Food Security Mission comprising wheat, rice and pulses to increase the annual production wheat by 8 million tons, rice by 10 million tons and pulses by 2 million tons by the end of 11th five year plan. Thus, a centrally sponsored scheme, "National Food Security Mission" was launched in October, 2007 and was implemented in 482 districts of 19 states. The programme has been implemented in J&K state during 2012–13 in wheat crop. Presently, Jammu, Kargil, Kathua, Poonch, Leh, Rajouri, Samba and Udhampur districts are covered under NFSM-wheat. To find out the impact of NFSM in wheat crop, a study entitled "Impact of National Food Security Mission interventions on wheat crop in Jammu region" was conducted. Multistage random sampling technique was employed for selecting the sample of 180 farmers (120 NFSM farmers and 60 non-NFSM farmers). The selected respondents were interviewed using a structured interview schedule. The result shows that there was a significant difference in case of age and size of land holding between NFSM and non-NFSM farmers. Majority of the NFSM farmers were middle pass whereas none of them were below primary level of education. There was difference in area, production and productivity between 2013–14 and 2017–18 was 10.47 ha, 1046.66 q and 15.04q/ha respectively. The total area under Ankur in 2013–14 was 34.3 ha with production and productivity of 554.68 q and 16.17 q/ha respectively whereas in 2017–18 it was 40.12 ha with production and productivity of 936.6q and 23.41 q/ha respectively. The difference in area, production and productivity was 5.82ha, 381.92q and 7.24 q/ha respectively between 2013–14 and 2017–18. NFSM programme has benefitted the beneficiary farmers by enhancing their total return per hectare. The benefit-cost ratio of different varieties of wheat grown by NFSM farmers was on higher side as compared to non-NFSM farmers.
