Abstract

The production of good quality fish seed in adequate quantity is the foremost important thing in order to boost up the aquaculture industry. A major portion of the fish seed was reported to come from Bankura district and hence, Bankura district was selected purposively for the study. Total 150 hatchery owners and 80 nursery owners were surveyed to identify the major constraints perceived by them. ‘Rank Based Quotient’ (RBQ) method propounded by Sabarathnam and Vennila (1996) was used to analyze the constraints. The five major constraints reported by the hatchery owners in the study area were constraints in marketing (76.81), diseases of broods (73.56), unavailability of labour (73.48), constraints related to extension services (69.48) and financial constraints (63.92). The five major constraints reported by the nursery owners in the study area were environmental constraints (78.93), financial constraints (70.71), constraints related to extension services (64.46), unavailability of labour (49.46) and seed diseases (48.57). Provision of soil and water testing facility, good transportation facility, equal distribution of Govt. subsidy, provision of submersible water facility, arrangement of marketing facility etc. of produced seed were some of the suggestions given by the seed producers.
