Abstract

The present study had been undertaken to understand the core value system and their preferences along with the association among terminal as well as instrumental values of Bal and non-BalVikas children. The total sample comprised of 180 respondents at the age group of 10–15 years from two selected districts of Uttarakhand (Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital). Out of 180 respondents, 83 were girls and 97 boys. Samples were drawn randomly from all currently running BalVikas centers and randomly selected non-BalVikas centers in the Nainital and Udhamsingh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand, India. Samples of 90 school going children at the age group of 10 to 15 years were randomly selected from currently running Bal Vikas centres (BVC) and an equal number of respondents i.e., 90 children were randomly chosen from non-BalVikas centres (N-BVC). A self-structured general information questionnaire along with the RokeachValue Survey (RVS) scaledeveloped by Rokeach M. (1973) administered to collect the data. The scale comprised of 36 values, included 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values as well. The most preferred terminal value ‘family security’ had significantly positive association with a sense of accomplishment, equality, happiness, inner-harmony, self-respect, social recognition, true friendship and wisdom. Similarly, top priority instrumental value ‘ambitious’ had highly significant positive correlation with broad-minded, helpfulness, honesty, intellectual, logical and obedient indicated that the attainment of these values are the primary objective of education and hardworking nature of Bal Vikas and non-BalVikas children. The above findings led the understanding of core value system, their preferences and many inter-related values among the terminal as well as the instrumental values of BalVikas and non-BalVikas children.
