Socio-economic status of the gir cattle owners in Ajmer district, Rajasthan

Abstract

The present paper investigates about socio economic status and biodiversity scenario of livestock endorsed by livestock owners in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. For the study data were collected from 160 livestock owners during 2016–17. A pretested, reliable and valid interview schedule was used for data collection. Findings revealed that majority (52.50%) of the respondents were in the middle age group while (42.50%) of respondents belonged to old age category and (5%) of the respondents belong to young age category, respectively. About 87.50 per cent of the respondents were literate and around 12.50 per cent were illiterate. About 55 per cent of the respondents had small herd size followed by medium and large herd size i.e. 30 and 15 per cent respectively. Majority (71.25%) of the respondents had medium level of mass media exposure followed by high and low level of mass media exposure i.e. 15.62 and 13.13 per cent, respectively. Results indicated that cattle were the most common (50.42%) livestock kept in the study area, followed by Buffaloes (18.47%). Sheep and Goat accounted for 17.59 per cent and 13.48 per cent, respectively.
