The concept of livelihood is comparatively new but is now widely utilized in poverty and rural development literature. A Household Livelihood Security Assessment (HLSA) may be a holistic and multi-disciplinary analysis. Livelihood security frameworks became useful for community and family assessments and social program design that help in understanding complex needs of families and communities. To work out whether households are successful in pursuing their livelihood strategies, it's important to seem at variety of outcome measures that capture need or well-being satisfaction. The study was conducted in two districts of Rohtak division namely Sonipat and Karnal by random selection and by selecting one block from each selected district and two villages from each of the chosen block randomly. From the chosen four villages a sample of 300 respondents i.e. 75 small and marginal farm families from each village was drawn randomly to assess livelihood capabilities and security of small and marginal farm families. Results of the study revealed that the majority of the capitals in both the districts were found medium level except physical capital which was high. Regarding overall livelihood security index, food security scored highest in both the district while water/sanitation security scored lowest. Karnal district had higher livelihood security indices for nearly all the indicators as compared to Sonipat district.
