Study on socio-personal and psychological characteristics in relation with entrepreneurial behaviour of potato growers, under Senapati district of Manipur

Abstract

The study was conducted in Senapati district, Mao-Maram sub-division of Manipur to study the various socio-personal and psychological characteristics of potato growers in relation to their entrepreneurial behaviour. Three villages were selected for the study where potato farming was practiced. The data was collected from a total of 100 respondents taking 37, 32, and 31 respondents respectively from each village. The data were collected with the help of pre-tested interview schedule using personal interview method. It was found that majority of the respondents were middle age farmers (57%), majority of the respondents had educational level high school and above (56%). Majority of the respondents maintained nuclear type family whose annual income was medium to high. Majority of the potato growers possessed medium to high entrepreneurial behaviour which found to have a significant correlation with family (0.762*), education (0.614*), annual income (0.855*), and cropping intensity (0.949*). Some of the major constrains as expressed by the potato growers were, ‘Non-availability of certified seed’ (72%), ‘low market value’ (65%), ‘Lack of improved irrigation system’ (78%), and ‘Non-availability of insurance when crop fail’ (85%).
