Assessment of socio-economic status and management practices related to backyard pig rearing in Hisar district of Haryana

Abstract

The present study was conducted to assess the socio-economic status and scientific knowledge pertaining to housing, feeding, breeding, health and general management practices followed by poor families rearing pigs in backyard system. Information related to respondents from seven different villages of Hisar district (Haryana) were collected through a standard questionnaire. Data about age, sex, caste, family type, family size, marital status, occupation, average monthly income, average annual income, education, land holding and type of house of pig owners were collected to get acquainted with the personal profile and socio-economic status of the respondents. Management system practices related to housing, feeding, breeding and health of pigs were also studied. A total of one hundred households were selected randomly and interviewed through questionnaire. It was concluded that poor pig rearing families were not having sufficient knowledge about scientific backyard pig rearing practices which indicates towards the need of training for successful backyard pig rearing.
