Abstract

Arecanut or betel nut (Areca catechu) is one of the important cash crops in India and ranks first in terms of both area and production of arecanut in world. In Tamil Nadu, Salem district occupies first in area under arecanut cultivation with the annual production of 3445 tonns of arecanut. Sample size of 120 arecanut farmers were selected for the study by using proportionate random sampling technique. Nearly two-third of respondents had medium level of overall marketing pattern. 67.50 per cent sold their products in the farm itself followed by 18.33 per cent of respondents sold in nearby town. Two-third of respondents sold their products to pre-harvest contractors and 37.50 per cent had favorite opinion about existing market facilities. Profit of arecanut farm is determined mainly by marketing pattern and need of market intelligence. Promoting the use of market intelligence helps them to market their produce at remunerative prices.
