Role of migrant labourers in rural Punjab: A farmer's view

Abstract

In Punjab, the influx of migrant labour particularly in agriculture sector started with the green revolution and picked up subsequently. The present study was carried out on a sample of 80 respondents. Data were collected through personal interviews of respondents with the help of a structured interview schedule. The findings revealed that Most of the respondent farmers opined that arrival of technology in human life is the main reason for decreased work culture among Punjabi people. Among various farm operations, majority of the respondents (92.5%) agreed that migrants are playing an important role in harvesting and sowing activities of the crops. Amenability of the migrant labourer' was considered as one the prime advantage of migrants (97.50 %). Thus in an overall scenario, migration of labour for agricultural purposes has been found beneficial for the Punjab agriculture.
